I should say evensong yesterday was not choral evensong. Most of the liturgy was spoken (by the reader with responses from the congregation).

The Magnificat (Mary's song from Luke 1: 46-55) and the Nunc Dimittis (Simeon's Song from Luke 2: 28-30) were sung by the choir triplet, and the psalm by the organist with responses by the congregation.

That's an interesting point you make Frances. Did they not recognise their healing? or were they simply hidebound (as you put it) by tradition - and if so what does that say to us today?

I once suggested in a sermon that it was perhaps because that one leper was a foreigner that he was able to act on his own instincts and return and give thanks. The others being Jews were hidebound by Jewish Law which said that they were not clean until the priest had examined them and declared them clean. I would like to think that they too would say thank you once they had been through the necessary rituals. Sometimes though gut feelings have to take priority over the 'done thing'! The foreigner just knew that he was healed and couldn't wait to have it confirmed by the priest.

Aphra - Evensong is the traditional English service of Evening Prayer, the counterpart of Matins (Morning Prayer). I love a really 'well done' Choral Evensong but, as Lorna says, it has become more of a performance by the choir than a service for the congregation to join in. That is mainly because it is not used so frequently now and many people are not familiar enough with the responses or the music to join in. As a teenager I was at a traditional English public school where we regularly worshipped through Matins and Evensong and the whole school were 'rehearsed' in the music, so I find it very sad now to find other music which I cannot sing, but even after all these years my body still reacts instinctively to the words, standing, sitting or kneeling as appropriate! A friend and I used to make a habit of visiting English cathedrals for Choral Evensong, which was always beautifully sung, but more of a performance than an act of worship. It is part of the downside of modernising everything. Perhaps we are so wrapped up in making it all understandable that we have lost some of the sheer wonder and awe of worshipping God beautifully.

This was all Greek to me. I don't know what evensong is so I can't begin to understand what you don't like about it!

I don't think I'd get the book "Nudge". I'd get the book "Clobber over the head".
A couple of weeks ago a good friend of mine who was on track for the ministry was arrested for possession of child porn.
Life has been a bit off-axis since then.
